Larnaca undergoes major transformation with €22 million projects

Larnaca is poised for a significant urban renewal, with a series of projects totalling over €22 million set to reshape its cityscape over the next two years.

At the heart of the transformation lies a dual-pronged effort to revitalise the city centre. A €5.1 million project will see the complete reconstruction of the commercial district’s remaining unpaved streets, enhancing pedestrian accessibility and improving overall infrastructure.

Simultaneously, a €3.5 million investment will breathe new life into Alkis and Akropolis squares, creating vibrant public spaces.

Mayor Andreas Vyras has announced that construction on these projects is expected to commence in September 2023, with completion anticipated in the autumn of 2026.

Beyond the city centre, Larnaca is also prioritising green spaces and community amenities. The €2.4 million Salina Park is nearing completion, scheduled to open its doors to the public in October 2023. A historic building within the park is undergoing a €1 million restoration and is expected to be unveiled in November.

Additionally, the municipality is developing Pattichio Park and a recreation area in Tsakkilero, both slated for completion in 2025.

To address the city’s growing population and evolving transportation needs, Larnaca is investing in sustainable urban mobility. A €18 million project, funded by the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan, aims to transform the city’s road network, prioritising public transport and cycling infrastructure.

The initiative includes the creation of dedicated bus and bike lanes, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and improved road safety measures. The Public Works Department is spearheading the effort, with construction expected to begin in January 2025 and conclude 18 months later.

The city’s vision encompasses the redevelopment of the old hospital into a municipal hall and the revitalisation of the Ayios Ioannis neighbourhood.

These projects, estimated to cost over €14 million, are currently in the planning stages, with tenders for the hospital conversion expected to be issued in the coming months.
