Larnaca urban redevelopment on track for June completion

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras inspected ongoing urban regeneration works in the city centre on Wednesday, accompanied by representatives from local business associations, to address concerns about the project’s impact on the area.

The first phase of the redevelopment project, which includes the renovation of streets and squares, is at an advanced stage with utility services now underground, the municipality said in a statement.

Workers have begun constructing the concrete base upon which final paving materials, including cobblestones and marble, will be installed. Completion of this base before Easter is expected to significantly improve pedestrian access across the affected areas.

Technical difficulties that emerged in the Ermou Street stormwater network have been overcome through alternative solutions, Vyras said during the site visit, acknowledging these issues had caused minor delays.

To absorb these setbacks, the contractor has extended works to the southern section of Ermou Street, with the revised schedule now targeting completion by mid-June 2025, earlier than initially planned for some segments.

Simultaneously, work continues on the second phase in the northern section of Ermou Street, from the junction with Grigori Afxentiou Avenue to Viktor Hugo Street. Additional work from Viktor Hugo Street to Galileou Street will commence after Easter, with traffic arrangements to be announced separately.

Business owners were informed that construction on Zenon Kitiefs, Kosma Lysioti and Evanthia Pieridi Streets will begin once works on the southern section of Ermou Street are completed.

Regarding the redevelopment of Akropolis and Alkis squares and surrounding streets, paving of Alkis Square and the asphalting of Orfeos Street and part of Louki Akrita Street are scheduled for completion by late April.

The municipality assured residents that the commercial centre and shops remain open for business throughout the construction period and encouraged citizens to continue patronising local establishments.

The municipality said that they are closely monitoring the progress of works to ensure their timely completion for the benefit of the local community and economy.
