Limassol regeneration project with bus and bike lanes progressing

Plans are progressing for the construction of bus lanes along Nikos and Despina Pattichis Avenue and the coastal road leading to Agios Tychonas, along with the development of bike lanes and two park-and-ride stations in Limassol. These projects are expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the city.

The Public Works Department has initiated the tender process for these priority projects under the Limassol Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, covering Areas A and B, which include the coastal front and the area south of the Troodos roundabout.

The works involve road reconstruction, bus lane creation, bus stop infrastructure development, and extensive cycling infrastructure.

Additionally, the projects will include roadside parking, pavement construction and reconstruction, installation of pedestrian and cyclist crossings, traffic light upgrades, improved signage, and other necessary infrastructure enhancements.

The deadline for receiving tenders is set for September 20, 2024, with an estimated value of €8 million for Phase A, covering the coastal road and bike lanes, and €2.35 million for Phase B.

The projects have secured funding from the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Cohesion Fund ‘Thalia 2021-2027’, with a total allocated budget of €15 million.

Evie Anayiotou, Head of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Branch of the Public Works Department, confirmed the project’s commitment and outlined the bus lane construction along the coastal avenue, starting from the park-and-ride station at Agios Tychonas and extending to the area near the Castle.

On Nikos and Despina Pattichis Avenue, bus lanes will begin at the Polemidia roundabout, where another park-and-ride station will be built, continuing to the junction with Makarios Avenue.
