Major €20 million upgrade set to reshape Kornos

Kornos is undergoing a major transformation, with two flagship projects worth over €20 million already launched or heading for implementation, according to Lefkara mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous.

“The municipal district of Kornos is expected to change radically in the next two to three years,” Sofokleous told Philenews.

“Every announcement must be on track and implementable, and this is my goal for the seven districts of the municipality of Lefkara,” he said, adding that “politics is judged by the project and not by the models.”

The most significant investment is the €18 million Sports Centre by the Cyprus Football Federation (Kop), a long-awaited project that has cleared key procedural hurdles.

Following talks between the municipality and Kop, a firm timeline has been set.

Planning permission was granted in July, and the municipality, in cooperation with the Larnaca Local Government Organisation (Eoa), will now move forward with the building permit. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and be completed by 2028.

The centre will include a main stadium with capacity for 1,500 spectators, designed to host youth national team matches, alongside three training fields, a hostel for athletes, and supporting infrastructure.

A synthetic turf pitch will also be built to accommodate children’s tournaments. The complex will additionally serve as Kop’s new headquarters. The official presentation is scheduled for June 19.

A second project, already under construction, is a €2 million multipurpose venue, set to be completed within three years.

The building will include an event hall, conference facilities and parking.

“I regret to note that a district with a large population and huge development prospects did not have a space that could host events of educational institutions, organised groups and the municipality,” the mayor said.

Further upgrades are also in the pipeline. During a recent meeting with the Minister of Transport and the Director of Postal Services, it was agreed to establish a Citizen Service Centre in Kornos.

At the same time, two public parks are already being built.

Efforts are also underway to preserve the area’s traditional crafts. The municipality is in talks to acquire a historic property once used by local women to produce red clay vases.

The plan is to convert the site into an interactive museum and workshop space.

“It was agreed that the specific space will continue, in a new form, to offer experiential workshops and be transformed into a museum with visitors from tourists and students,” Sofokleous said.

“It is a timeless request, which I received from all the organised groups and mainly I received the anxiety of the citizens that this style has begun to be lost, because there are no incentives.”

In parallel, the municipality and Larnaca’s authorities have renewed their call for the creation of a Technical School in Kornos, a project announced by President Nikos Christodoulides and expected to be confirmed in the coming days.
