MoC urges businesses to promote women’s empowerment

A senior Ministry of Commerce official yesterday urged businesses in the Kingdom to promote women’s empowerment.

Secretary of State Serei Borapich made the statement while speaking at an event held to mark International Women’s Day.

The event titled ‘Gender Equality Means Business’ was organised by UN Women along with the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia with support from the Australian Embassy in the Kingdom.

The Secretary of State emphasised the critical importance of gender equality in the overall economic development of the country.

“Businesses must commit to international principles regarding women empowerment and this will make a huge difference.”

As a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, Cambodia has endeavoured to promote the empowerment of women in education since 2007 through gender mainstreaming in education policies and action plans.

Out of the more than 500,000 entrepreneurs in Cambodia, women own more than 300,000 enterprises, the association data reveals. In other words, women have ownership in around 60 percent of enterprises in the Kingdom.

Startupsandplaces.com, a prominent website tracking start-up scenarios across the world, says one of the important factors that make the Kingdom’s nascent startup scene stronger is the presence of a large number of tech-skilled women founders.
