MoT, SAI mull events to draw more tourists to Siem Reap

Synopsis: Siem Reap attracted nearly 2.9 million tourists in the first half of 2025, reflecting an increase of more than 50 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Ministry of Tourism and Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) will jointly organise new and international tourism events to attract more national and international tourists to visit Siem Reap province.

Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism and Lu Wei, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd discussed the plan during a meeting held in Phnom Penh, on Wednesday.

Hak lauded SAI’s efforts in helping to continuously boost the growth of air passengers, as well as the company’s excellent initiative in seeing the rich tourism potential and investment opportunities of Siem Reap province.

“These new, attractive, and international tourism events align perfectly with the Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025 campaign, which seeks to draw more national and international tourists to Siem Reap and Cambodia as a whole,” Hak said.

However, the meeting did not disclose the details of tourism events planned to be held in Siem Reap province under the bilateral cooperation.

President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA) Chhay Sivlin said the Royal Government issued a new tourism roadmap aiming to attract more international tourists to Siem Reap, as the province has many temples and heritage sites.

“We are a private sector in tourism and are preparing several events to promote the potential tourist destinations in line with the Ministry of Tourism guidelines,” she told Khmer Times.

Sivlin said that CATA has arranged several events for the private sector and leaders of tourist companies to exchange ideas and promote potential tourist destinations in the province.

Siem Reap Province attracted nearly 2.9 million tourists in the first half of 2025, reflecting an increase of more than 50 percent compared to the same period last year, according to provincial authorities.

The program was unveiled amid the information that the SAI would see more airlines operating international flight services by the end of 2025.

According to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, a number of foreign airlines have applied for operating flight service to the airport in Siem Reap province, citing that those airlines are from South Korea, namely East Jet Airways, T’way Air, and Jeju Airlines, IndiGo Air from India, Firefly Airlines from Malaysia, and Air Cambodia.

In Siem Reap province, tourists have more options for visits to cultural, heritage sites and natural tourism landscapes.

Situated in northwest Siem Reap province, the 401-square-km Angkor Archaeological Park is home to 91 ancient temples, which were built from the ninth to the 13th centuries.

The Park, inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1992, is the most popular tourist spot in the Southeast Asian country.
