Visitor numbers at restaurants, cafes and bars in Cyprus reached 90 per cent of their total capacity in August, according to Neophytos Thrasyvoulou, president of the Federation of Leisure Centre Owners (Osika).
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Thrasyvoulou noted that “August was a positive month for the sector, although some areas, such as Polis Chrysochous, experienced lower-than-expected weekday traffic”.
Despite this, he said that “August saw satisfactory visitor numbers at leisure centres, thanks to an influx of local visitors”.
Thrasyvoulou went on to mention that an increase in flights during September and October may provide an uplift to the sector, leading to increased traffic at restaurants and other similar businesses.
Moreover, he expressed hope that this higher visitor rate will continue until November 15, the date when many establishments in Cyprus close for the winter season.
The Osika president also highlighted the need to extend the tourist season, noting that this would bring multiple benefits to the tourism industry.
Regarding September, Thrasyvoulou said that those in the food service sector were satisfied with the month’s performance so far.
“In addition to local and British visitors”, he continued, “Cyprus’ leisure centres had also attracted tourists from other markets, including France and Poland”.
Furthermore, Thrasyvoulou stated that the federation is in ongoing contact with the Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, and that efforts are being made to boost tourism despite regional turmoil and the influx of tourists to the north.
Finally, the Osika president said that intensive discussions with the relevant ministries will begin in October, with the goal of providing assistance to business owners.
