Nimul calls for more Korean investment in key sectors

Synopsis: According to official data, trade between Cambodia and Korea in first five months reached over $362 million, up 11% compared to the same period last year.

Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul Friday encouraged Korean investors to invest and do more business, especially in potential sectors such as modern agriculture, food processing industry, automotive, electronics, and digital technology.

Presiding over the opening ceremony of the ‘Mini-Korea Brand & Entertainment Expo 2025’ in the capital, Nimul spoke highly of the efforts of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea, KOTRA and other relevant actors in organising the exhibition.

She stressed that the event offers opportunities in trade and investment, as well as seeking cooperation for the common interests of both countries.

Among the distinguished participants present on the occasion were Park Jung Wook, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom of Cambodia, Kuoch Pheng, Co-Chair of the Working Group on Production, Processing for Export and Trade Facilitation of the Government-Private Sector Forum, Koo Bonkyung, Regional Director for Southeast Asia and Oceania at the Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), as well as representatives of ministries and institutions, KOTRA officials, and representatives of Korean companies.

“This exhibition plays an important role in promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of Korea and enhancing people-to-people contacts, which is part of helping to enhance the value of bilateral cooperation relations, exchange traditions and cultures in the spirit of promoting stronger and deeper friendship,” Nimul said.

The Minister also encouraged the private sectors of both countries to participate in the programs according to each schedule in large numbers and to seize the maximum opportunities to enter into business and investment partnerships.

She also emphasised the importance of taking maximum advantage of the Cambodia-Korea Bilateral Free Trade Agreement, the ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement of which both countries are members, to help further promote the growth of bilateral trade.

“The Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency shall explore the possibility of partnering with the Export Promotion Working Group and the General Department of Trade Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce to organise roadshows, promotional seminars on product/service needs in the Korean-Cambodian market and import procedures, business matchmaking meetings, and joint exhibition programs, etc., to continue and expand the scope of creating opportunities for both private sectors,” she said.

Ever since the historic Cambodia-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA) was signed in December 2022, Cambodia has seen a significant rise in Korean investment.

The ministry stated that CKFTA has helped the progress of trade between the two countries, becoming an important mechanism to promote more trade and investment cooperation.

Official figures showed that in the first five months of 2025, trade between Cambodia and Korea reached over $362 million, an increase of 11 percent compared to the same period last year.

Last year, the bilateral trade volume between Cambodia and South Korea rose by 12 percent to $840 million.

Cambodia mainly exports footwear and other apparel, travel products, beverages, electrical and electronic components, rubber, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products to South Korea.

The Kingdom imports vehicles, electronics, kitchen appliances, beverages, pharmaceuticals and finished plastics and products.
