Officials test new Paphos student dorms with overnight stay and chicken dinner

The Mayor of Paphos and the Rector of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) sampled student life on Monday, spending the night in a newly built student dorm to evaluate its facilities before its official opening.

Mayor Phedon Phedonos and Rector Panagiotis Zaphiris, along with other officials and student representatives, dined on a traditional Cypriot meal of boiled chicken and pasta in the dorm’s kitchen, marking the soft launch of the accommodation.

The 16 million euro facility, comprising 203 rooms, was constructed by Paphos Municipality in just 11 months. It will house students from CUT and other academic institutions in the city.

“This hands-on approach allows us to assess the facilities and ensure the infrastructure’s quality and functionality,” Phedonos said. He added that the first residents, including 140 CUT students, would move in within days.

The dorm will also accommodate 15 students from the American University of Beirut and three from the University of Neapolis Paphos. Medical students from Nicosia universities doing internships at Paphos Hospital have also requested accommodation.

Phedonos revealed plans for additional student amenities, including parking spaces, parks, and sports areas on 32 adjacent plots.

Rector Zaphiris praised the municipality’s efforts, highlighting the growth of the university’s Paphos campus from 150 students last year to 600 this academic year.
