PM welcomes US firms keen on investing in agri-products

Prime Minister Hun Manet Tuesday welcomed the US companies seeking investment opportunities and interested in exporting Cambodian agricultural products to the US market, as well as promoting cooperation in the field of education in the Kingdom.

During a discussion with the US business delegation led by Patrick Murphy, Executive Vice President of Rice and Grain Global Sourcing at Otis McAllister, at the Peace Palace, Mr Hun Manet emphasized the Royal Government’s priorities for the agricultural sector including tax incentives for agriculture, agricultural modernization, deployment of agricultural technical officers at the local, establishment of modern farming communities as well as logistics systems and infrastructure aimed at reducing costs and increasing the competitiveness of Cambodia’s agricultural products.

Murphy told Mr Hun Manet that the US business mission aims to explore investment opportunities and connect with business partners in the Kingdom to export Cambodian agricultural products to the US market, according to the press release of the Prime Minister’s spokesperson unit.

“The delegation also aims to promote cooperation in the field of education in Cambodia. In fact, a company in the United States has decided to set up its representative office in Cambodia to accommodate Cambodian students who wish to continue their studies in the US,” the release added.

Mr Hun Manet welcomed the interest shown by the US business delegation and the companies in seeking investment opportunities and interests in exporting Cambodian agricultural products to the US market.

Mr Hun Manet also encouraged the US delegation to continue to engage in more detailed discussions with relevant ministries and institutions to seize investment and business opportunities in agriculture, education and other potential sectors in Cambodia.

According to the report of the General Directorate of Agriculture posted by the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank of Cambodia (ARDB), Cambodia exported more than 6.13 million tonnes of agricultural products in the first half of 2024, an increase of 57 percent compared to the same period in 2023, earning more than $2.8 billion.

The agricultural products that have contributed to the growth of exports include milled rice, paddy rice, fresh cassava, cassava flour, cashew nuts, corn, fresh longan, fresh mango and pepper.Last year, Cambodia exported 8.82 million tonnes of agricultural products, earning nearly $5 billion. The main products exported by Cambodia included rice, bananas, mangoes, cassava, cashew nuts, corn, palm oil, pepper and tobacco.
