As of mid-December, Prey Veng rice exports to Vietnam reached 2.94 million tonnes worth over $836.67 million, reported the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) on Monday.
Ouk Samnang, Director of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Prey Veng Province told the media during a programme on the ‘Dry Season Rice Production for 2024-2025’, “This represents an increase of 54.2 percent from the 75,000 hectares planned, exceeding last year’s figure which recorded only 23,544 hectares.”
Samnang said that Prey Veng province is favourable for agriculture including rice and other crops. “From January 1 to December 14, the amount of rice exports to Vietnam reached 2,941,420
tonnes with a total revenue of $836,673,831.”
He pointed out that the average price of wet rice is 1,040 riels per kilogram for the International Rice (IR) standard while the Oryza Mekongensis (OM) standard stands at 1,030 riels per kilogram.
The Director emphasised that in nearly all districts and towns within Prey Veng, farmers can cultivate rice two to three times annually, achieving relatively high yields.
Samnang noted that rice is primarily exported to Vietnam via two main border gates: the Banteay Chakrei International Border in Preah Sdach District and the Koh Roka International Border in Peam Chor district, Prey Veng province.
He went on to inform about the production of horticultural and industrial crops during the dry season, including white corn, watermelons and different types of peppers, which was achieved on a total area of 862 hectares, equivalent to 109.1 percent of the planned 790 hectares.
“The industrial crops such as red corn, soybeans, peanuts, sesame, sugarcane, cassava and lotus were achieved on a total area of 2,086 hectares, equivalent to 40.8 percent of the planned 5,055 hectares.”
The Director stated that between January 1 and December 14, the total quantity of fresh mangoes exported to Vietnam reached 133,760 tonnes with an average price of 714 riels per kilogram, the exports generated a total revenue of $21,360,122.
