An international showcase of young talent, the first Blue Regatta Kimon has had an impact on youth sailing and Cyprus’ maritime heritage
From last Thursday to Sunday, the city of Larnaca has been host to the 1st Blue Regatta Kimon, an event that has generated buzz among young sailing enthusiasts and their supporters worldwide. Organised by the Cyprus International Sailing Club (CISC) and the Nautical Club of Larnaca (NOLA), the event is not only a thrilling competition but also a celebration of Cyprus’ maritime heritage and stunning natural beauty.
CISC and NOLA have long been pillars of the sailing community in Cyprus. Their joint effort to organise the regatta is a testament to their desire to promote Cyprus as a premier sailing destination. Despite the challenges posed by late-year planning, these clubs have successfully pooled their resources and expertise to create an event that is attracting international attention.
“We are very proud to have managed to overcome the time limits, which were against us, as we decided to do this very late in the year,” member of organising committee Rafaela Tsolaki said. “We were able to organise and attract international sailors, and that is a significant accomplishment for us.”
The regatta has seen young sailors from eight countries competing in the Optimist and Laser classes. With a total of 55 athletes registered, the event was held in a a vibrant and competitive atmosphere. Among those are young sailors from Cyprus, Greece, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Georgia and Israel, ranging from beginners to more experienced competitors. They have the opportunity to test their skills, navigating challenging courses and demonstrating their sailing prowess.
One of the primary goals of the 1st Blue Regatta Kimon is to provide a platform for youth development in the sport of sailing. By attracting international sailors to Cyprus, the organisers aimed to create a competitive environment that also offered local sailors a chance to participate in an international competition without having to travel abroad.
“Sport initiatives that have the interest of Cyprus’ young athletes at the centre should be staged regularly,” Tsolaki said. “It creates a foundation for the athletes to develop and puts Cyprus on the map.” Speaking on behalf of the main sponsor, the.startuportal, Agni Photiou echoed this sentiment: “It is with our great pleasure that we support these kinds of initiatives on the island. Youth sports should flourish and be developed whilst promoting Cyprus.”
The collaboration between CISC and NOLA is not just about the competition but also about fostering a sense of community and sportsmanship. “The regatta will strengthen the reputation of Cyprus as a premier sailing destination and attract international attention to the country’s great sailing community,” Tsolaki said.
In addition to the competitive races, the regatta was also an opportunity for participants to connect and create lasting memories. With international coaches and experienced personnel involved, the young sailors benefited from top-notch guidance and support throughout the event. This blend of competition and camaraderie is expected to leave a lasting impact on all those involved.
By bringing together young sailors from around the world, the event highlighted the island’s unique position as a hub for maritime sports. It also underscored the dedication of local clubs to nurturing talent and promoting the sport on an international stage.
“We believe that hosting events like this regularly can significantly contribute to the development of young athletes in Cyprus. It provides them with the necessary exposure and experience to excel in their sport,” Tsolaki added. The enthusiasm and commitment of the organisers are palpable, and their efforts are sure to inspire future generations of sailors.
The Nautical Club of Larnaca has a storied history that dates back to 1934 when sailing first began in Larnaca. Officially founded in 1951, the club, initially known as the Larnaca Flamingo Nautical Club, has been a beacon of maritime activity. The club’s journey, from its early days with homemade boats racing in Larnaca Bay to housing refugees during the Turkish invasion of 1974, underscores its resilience and community spirit. The club’s ongoing contributions to sailing and other aquatic sports have solidified its role in Cyprus’ sporting landscape.
In conclusion, the 1st Blue Regatta Kimon represents a significant milestone for the sailing community in Cyprus. It is an event that celebrates youth, skill, and the enduring allure of the sea. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the CISC and NOLA, this regatta is making a lasting impact and setting the stage for many more successful events in the future.
