Solid pub food at chain venue
There’s something particularly enjoyable about unplanned joy. A recent visit to Harat’s, an Irish pub in Limassol’s tourist area, was a spur-of-the-moment decision when another restaurant across the street was full. Instead of waiting for a table, we finally tried Harat’s out.
Harat’s is part of a larger international franchise with branches spanning the globe, from Hungary to Kazakhstan, and even the USA, providing a casual, brightly-coloured atmosphere. And while the franchise aspect can make it feel a bit cookie-cutter, it still offers a pleasant environment. Think Irish pub through the prism of an American diner, with a dash of Eastern European sensibilities. This means you’ll see a large mural of The Beatles, Captain America artwork, a foosball table, as well as tables designed to be used as chess boards.
The weather was cool, ideal for sitting in the pub’s outdoor area. Limassol can often feel stifling, especially during the warmer months, but the breezy weather added to the pub’s welcoming vibe. The outside seating is simple yet cosy, creating the kind of setting where you’d be equally happy sharing drinks with friends or enjoying a game on one of the many TVs. Also, this being Cyprus, there are two massive cats roaming the grounds.
By sheer luck, we discovered an offer exclusive to Tuesdays, where the pub sells a burger and a pint of house lager for €14. Considering the burger alone usually costs the same, it felt like a good deal. This was one of the two mains.
We had one Harat’s burger and a Grilled Chicken, albeit with a small request — to substitute the standard Idaho potatoes for mashed potatoes. Thankfully, the kitchen was accommodating.
We also ordered grilled wings, which arrived with carrot sticks, celery and two dipping sauces — a tangy tomato salsa and a creamy blue cheese dressing.
The food itself was satisfying. The Harat’s burger was the undeniable star. Juicy and flavourful, it was enhanced by the sweetness of caramelised onions, which balanced the robust beef patty. It felt indulgent without being overwhelming, just what you’d expect from a solid pub burger.
The grilled chicken was equally enjoyable, tender and well-marinated with a herby butter that permeated the meat. Oregano seemed to be the primary herb, although there was also a hint of dill as well. The mashed potatoes were pretty good, a simple but classic side.
As for the wings, they were just the right level of smoky and crispy, with the blue cheese sauce being particularly fitting.
For those who like to keep their hands clean, the pub provides gloves with both the wings and the burger.
As for the house lager, the menu said that Harat’s is supplied by Carlsberg. Not my favourite, I must admit, but considering the offer, you wouldn’t say no. That said, there is a strong selection of beers on tap so there are better alternatives.
A minor letdown was the lack of dessert options. After a pleasant meal, we were in the mood for something sweet, but Harat’s doesn’t offer any.
The atmosphere was laid-back, the food reliable, and the service accommodating. If you’re looking for a relaxed night out with solid pub fare and a decent pint, you won’t go wrong – especially on a Tuesday.
