Retail sector sees 5.5% surge in March

The Retail Trade Turnover Value Index increased by 5.5% in March 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, while during the same month, the Retail Trade Turnover Volume Index increased by 5.2% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the Statistical Service announced on Maundy Thursday.

It is added that for the period January-March 2024, the Value Index is estimated to have increased by 5.4% and the Volume Index by 4.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the Service, the highest percentage increase in the Retail Trade Turnover Value Index compared to March 2023 was recorded in the category of food, beverages, and tobacco in specialized stores (13.2%), pharmaceutical and orthopedic products, cosmetics (11.8%), and educational and entertainment goods (10.5%), while on the contrary, the highest decrease was recorded in retail trade outside stores (-13.4%).

Similarly, the highest percentage increase in the Retail Trade Turnover Volume Index compared to March 2023 was recorded in the category of educational and entertainment goods (10.5%), food, beverages, and tobacco in specialized stores (10.4%), and pharmaceutical and orthopedic products, cosmetics (9.7%), while the highest decrease was also in this case in retail trade outside stores (-13.4%).
