Shanghai firm evinces interest in Kingdom’s infrastructure development

Shanghai Geoharbour Group, a Chinese company specialising in geotechnical engineering solutions, is keen on investing in potential sectors including the special economic zones (SEZs) and infrastructure development across the Kingdom.

The details were shared during the meeting between Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and Xu Shilong, CEO of Shanghai Geoharbour Group in Phnom Penh on October 21.

During the discussion, the Chinese business delegation highlighted the company’s investment activities, including the construction of Techo International Airport (TIA), which is scheduled to begin operations early next year.

Building on this success, the delegation expressed interest in exploring more investment opportunities in Cambodia’s special economic zones and infrastructure development.

They also provided an overview of the company, highlighting its extensive experience in completing over 200 major projects across Asia, including ports, airports, and artificial islands.

Responding to their interest, Chanthol presented the infrastructure development projects such as expressways, Funan Techo Cannel (FTC) and other related ports which are currently open for all investors without discrimination.

“Delegation from the Shanghai Geoharbour Group can also examine investment opportunities in these projects as well,” the Deputy Prime Minister added.

He went on to express an appreciation to the company for coming to explore potential investment opportunities at the CDC directly, Talking to Khmer Times, Lor Vichet, Vice President of the Cambodia Chinese Commerce Association (CCCA) said, “Currently, the Kingdom has significant infrastructure development needs as the country moves towards graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2029.”

He emphasised the importance of upgrading key infrastructure, such as airports, seaports, highways, and railways, to enhance transportation and logistics competitiveness. “These improvements would make our country a more attractive destination for investors, particularly those operating in special economic zones,” Vichet said.

He also mentioned the timely feasibility study visits by the Shanghai Geoharbour Group to explore the country’s investment potential as it aligns with Cambodia’s transition into a new economic phase, underscored by the upcoming inauguration of Techo International Airport, which will be the 9th largest airport in the world when it opens in early 2025.
