Techo International Airport construction reviewed ahead of operation on July 10

A joint working group meeting Friday reviewed the progress of the construction of Techo International Airport (TIA) which is scheduled to be put into operation in July this year.

Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), chaired the meeting with the participation of senior management officials of Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC).

The meeting reviewed the progress of the construction and remaining works of construction as well as the process of issuing airport certificates, said SSCA’s Secretary of State and spokesman Sinn Chanserey Vutha.

Friday’s discussions also focused on the final stages of construction, including infrastructure development, technological installations, and logistical preparations necessary for the airport’s opening, he said.

Techo International Airport, Phase 1, Level 4F, is now 96 percent complete as of April 2025, he said.

“If nothing changes, the airport is scheduled to be put into official operation on July 10, welcoming national and international tourists from the region and the world,” Vutha told Khmer Times.

The project to build a $1.5 billion-worth TIA has been undertaken by the Cambodia Airport Investment Co Ltd, a joint venture between the Royal Government of Cambodia and Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation.

Located nearly 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, TIA covers an area of 2,600 hectares in Kandal and Takeo provinces. The airport can receive long-haul transcontinental flights, including giant aircraft such as Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-800.

With the July deadline approaching, all stakeholders in the meeting emphasized the importance of the collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector to ensure the timely and successful completion of this significant infrastructure project for Cambodia, he said.

“The construction progress is almost complete, but what we continue to monitor are issues related to the process in accordance with the technical conditions for issuing certificates and the technical conditions for putting into operation,” he said.

Cambodia’s aviation sector experienced a remarkable surge in 2024 with the three international airports collectively handling a record high of 6.2 million passengers, according to SSCA figures.

There are 31 national and international airlines operating flights to and from the three international airports, read the report.
