The car market is continuing its upward streak, with passenger saloon car registrations up 23.3% in the first quarter of 2024, reaching 10,189 compared to 8,264 in the same period last year.
A slight decrease has been recorded in the registrations of used saloon cars, which constitute the majority with 56.2% (5,724) against the 43.8% (4,465) occupied by the registrations of new saloons.
It is worth mentioning that the share of petrol-powered saloon cars in the total of this category of vehicles decreased in the first quarter of 2024 to 49.2% (from 59% in the corresponding period of 2023), as did the share of diesel-powered cars (from 11% in 2023 to 9.9% in 2024).
In contrast, the share of electric cars increased to 3.8% in the first quarter of 2024 from 2.6% in the first quarter of 2023, while hybrid cars continue to show impressive growth, now occupying 37.2% of market from 27.4% that they held in the period January – March 2023.
Overall passenger saloon car market
There were 9,217 private passenger saloon car registrations in the first quarter of 2024.
Toyota maintains the lead, with 1,901 registrations, with Mazda and Nissan following, with 1,154 and 1,146 registrations respectively.
Kia counted 703 registrations, while Mercedes is also in the top 5 of the relevant list, with 555 registrations.
The list of the top registrations of saloon car brands also includes BMW (541), Volkswagen (538), Hyundai (261), Honda (245) and Audi (225).
New passenger saloon cars
The registrations of new passenger saloon cars for the first quarter of 2024 numbered over 4,000.
Kia came out on top with 677 entries, with Nissan just behind with 579 entries.
Toyota counted 463 registrations, Volkswagen 423 and Hyundai 224.
The list of new saloons registered in the first quarter also includes brands such as BMW (220), Mercedes (166), Skoda (150), Audi (147), Ford (125) and Jeep (125).
Used Passenger Saloon Cars
A total of 5,157 registrations of used passenger saloon cars took place in the first quarter of 2024.
Toyota holds the lead, with 1,438 registrations, with Mazda trailing slightly behind, with 1,126.
In third place is Nissan (567) and in fourth is Mercedes (389), while the top five is completed with the registrations of BMW (321).
Honda (211), Suzuki (116), Volkswagen (115), Land Rover (112) and Lexus 94 are also on the list of top registered used passenger car brands.
