Vietnam Airlines officially launched non-stop flights between Phnom Penh and Hanoi on Sunday, shifting from its earlier route connecting Phnom Penh to Hanoi by having a stop in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Under the new route plan, Vietnam Airlines will operate this service between Phnom Penh and Hanoi four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays using modern Airbus A321 Jet aircraft.
The inaugural flight, number VN922, took off from Phnom Penh International Airport at 08:00pm on October 27 and landed at Noi Bai International Airport at 9:55pm the same day.
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, said that by transporting passengers and goods, direct flights are great ‘ambassadors’ in strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.
“The direct flight between the two capitals officially put into operation will contribute to increasing the connection network between the two countries,” Dang said.
The airline will focus on further promoting its role as a ‘bridge’ to contribute to comprehensively promoting the economy and culture, as well as the neighbourly relationship between the two countries, Dang affirmed.
Currently, Vietnam Airlines is the only Vietnamese airline operating non-stop flights between Phnom Penh and Hanoi.
Previously, passengers wanting to fly from Hanoi to Phnom Penh needed to transit in Vientiane, Laos on the airline’s trans-Indochina flight.

The new route increases the total number of routes between Vietnam and Cambodia for Vietnam Airlines to five, including four direct routes – Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City-Phnom Penh; Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City-Siem Reap and Trans-Indochina. The total number of flights between the two countries rises to 86 flights per week now.
The new route will not only contribute to helping attract international tourists between Cambodia and Vietnam, but it will also strengthen trade relations and increase investment between the two countries, said Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA).
“The launch of Hanoi-Phnom Penh direct flights by Vietnam from today will contribute to facilitating air travel between the two countries by providing better options for air passengers, especially business people and tourists. It will also help in developing more tourism packages between our two countries,” Havannall said at the launching ceremony.
The launching of direct flight will be a symbol of fruitful success, closer ties and cooperation in all fields for the two countries, he added.
