Cyprus Public Transport carries more than 36,000 passengers daily

Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) marked its fourth anniversary, showcasing its role in transforming public transportation and attracting more passengers.

CEO Julio Tiron, speaking at a media event, highlighted the company’s achievements, including daily ridership exceeding 36,000. He added that CPT employs over 600 staff, making it a leading employer.

“Four years ago, we took on the challenge of improving public transport in Nicosia and Larnaca. We set out to increase the use of public transportation,” Tiron said, adding that reducing traffic congestion leads to lower pollution levels and an overall improvement in the quality of life.

“We now see a wider range of ages using our services, especially individuals between 25 and 50 years old. Previously, it was mainly young people and the elderly. Many of our passengers have alternative means of transportation, such as cars. Imagine if these 36,000 daily passengers chose to drive their cars; it would be impossible for the city,” he remarked.

A video presentation detailed CPT’s innovations. The “pame” app, launched in August 2022, provides real-time bus information, improving trip planning and reducing waiting times.

January 2022 saw the introduction of a Europe-first 5G Wi-Fi network across the bus fleet and stations. The same month, the upgraded Nicosia network launched, adapting to the expanded city and enhancing connectivity. Frequency on main routes increased, and travel times reduced.

Automatic ticket vending machines were installed in September 2022 at central stations, alongside prototype bus stops at Nicosia General Hospital, later followed by Makareio and Tamassos stations.

Electric buses began operating in July 2023, with a long-term goal of an entirely electric fleet. A pilot programme for on-demand transport for those with mobility disabilities was also implemented.

The “park and ride” service launched in September 2023, attracting 500 daily users outside Nicosia, reducing car trips to just five buses.

Driver training received a boost in January 2024 with the introduction of a driving simulator, allowing for professional training in extreme situations. The company reported a 30% reduction in accidents between 2021 and 2024.
