Focus Consortium in collaboration with the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCA) has launched a feasibility study on the proposed Mondulkiri airport and the development of satellite cities in the province.
The firm was authorized to conduct the projects in January.
SSCA has been cooperating with the Focus Consortium to develop the projects in accordance with the laws and procedures in force in Cambodia, Sin Chansereyvutha, its Under-Secretary of State said.
“Currently, the firm is working with SSCA on the detailed feasibility study for both projects,” Chansereyvutha said.
The cost of the projects can be estimated only when the feasibility study is completed, he added.
The company was granted in January the rights to study and invest in the new airport project under the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis and also another project for developing a multi-purpose satellite city in the province.
Focus Group is a multinational firm comprising investors from Cambodia, Malaysia, China, Europe and the Middle East.
Finding investments for the new Mondulkiri airport project and the multi-purpose satellite city depends on this study, he said.
“If the company finds that the projects are feasible, it will be another step towards getting the investments,” he said.
The Royal Government of Cambodia has previously allowed China Power to conduct a feasibility study on the airport investment project in Mondulkiri, but the firm failed to execute the project as planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic disruption.
At that time, the Mondulkiri airport was planned to be built on an area of 300 hectares, about 20 kilometres from Sen Monorom city and was estimated to cost more than $80 million.
The project for building an airport in Mondulkiri is in the country’s construction agenda of establishing flight connectivity between the tourism hubs of different countries in the world and also to provide strong infrastructure support to the tourism sector in the country, according to SSCA.
Apart from the airport in Mondulkiri province, the Royal Government of Cambodia also proposed to construct another airport on Koh Rong Island, off Preah Sihanouk province.
Currently, there are three international airports in the country. Two new airports are now under construction – one is located in Kandal and Takeo provinces and another in Koh Kong province. khmertimeskh
