The first mobile desalination units will be ready in October 2025, the water development department said on Tuesday.
The department added that Cyprus was top of Europe regarding per capita storage of rainwater and the use of non-conventional resources, with 110 dams – of which 57 are large – five desalination plants covering over 70 per cent of household water needs and nine tertiary sewerage treatment plants through which over 80 per cent of recovered water is used for irrigation.
Commenting on press reports in Alithia that Cyprus was dependent on rain, the department said it did not reflect the true picture.
The department said plans were in place to address water shortages and much more was in the pipeline.
It added that the contribution of the public in avoiding waste and saving water was important.
