Larnaca to open new €2.4 million Salina urban park this weekend

A new green space in the heart of Larnaca, the Salina Park, will welcome its first visitors this Saturday, November 23.

The 14,000-square-metre park, situated adjacent to the Municipal Garden, features a central ornamental lake with a fountain as its centrepiece. The project, which cost €2.4 million, was co-funded by the EU.

Designed by architect Elena Sofianou-Olympiou and constructed by Wade Adams Contracting (Cyprus) Limited – AKI Constructions Ltd, the park incorporates existing mature trees and adds 200 new plantings to enhance its greenery.

The space includes two main entrances, one on Leonidas Kiouppi Street opposite the Municipal Garden and another on Griva Digeni Avenue. Additional pedestrian access points are located behind two preserved historic buildings, formerly housing the District Officer and Police Director.

The park’s features include an amphitheatre with palm gardens, a cultural events area known as ‘Xefoto’, and the Alea walkway lined with deciduous trees. Rather than extensive paving, the designers opted for natural earth surfaces for walking paths. The facility includes a playground and has been designed with enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities.

A refreshment facility in the centre of the park is expected to be operational soon, with the municipal tender committee set to select an operator by Monday.

The Mayor of Larnaca told philenews that while the official inauguration will be scheduled for a later date, residents are encouraged to visit after November 23 to “enjoy nature and take walks” in what he described as “a beautiful space that adds a special touch to central Larnaca”.

The park will be connected to the Municipal Garden via a pedestrian crossing, forming part of the city’s expanding green infrastructure.
