Airports, which invests in Cambodia International Airports, has proposed to finish the terminal expansion work at Sihanoukville International Airport in 2026. The airport will bear the International Air Transport Association (IATA) code ‘KOS’.

Emmanuel Menanteau, Regional Director of VINCI Airports, mentioned the airport development project during a courtesy call on Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) on February 1, according to a statement issued by CDC.

“The project for building a new terminal is scheduled to be completed in 2026,” Menanteau said.

During the meeting, he also sought the support of the Deputy Prime Minister on the investment works regarding the airport investment projects in Cambodia.

VINCI Airports has approximately 25 years of experience in Cambodia investing in airport projects. The three airports the company has operated in Cambodia are Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport and  Sihanoukville International Airport.

The airport company is a subsidiary of the VINCI Group, a leading investor in concession projects covering services such as VINCI Airports, VINCI Highways, VINCI Railways, VINCI Construction, VINCI Transport Infrastructure and VINCI Energy.

Sihanouk International Airport, located 20 kilometres east of Sihanoukville City, is Cambodia’s third-largest international airport.

In 2019, Cambodia Airports, which manages international airports in the Kingdom, expanded the runway in the Sihanoukville International Airport from 2,500 metres to 3,300 metres to increase the capacity of the airport for accommodating wide-body, long-haul aircraft.

Cambodia’s international airports have handled 4.11 million air passengers in the January-October period of 2023, a year-on-year increase of 144 percent, according to a State Secretariat of Civil Aviation’s report.

Figures from the Ministry of Tourism showed that Cambodia attracted 5.43 million international tourists in 2023, a sharp increase of 139 percent from 2.27 million in 2022.

A total of 1.86 million foreign tourists arrived in Cambodia via the three international airports, a year-on-year increase of 135 percent from 791,603 in 2022, read the report.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals to Cambodia via airports increased significantly last year, partly due to the airport infrastructure and air connection flights, said Top Sopheak, spokesman of the Ministry of Tourism.

“Increasing direct flights from abroad to Cambodia, new air routes, and the new airport in the Siem Reap province have helped more passengers to travel to Cambodia,” Sopheak told Khmer Times. Credit From Khmertimeskh
